Susan Scanland has practiced as a board certified gerontological nurse practitioner for 23 years in
long-term care, home care, and outpatient clinics. She currently maintains a geropsychiatric consulting
practice at a Scranton Pennsylvania long-term care facility.
An MSN graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Susan taught geriatric and family nurse practitioner
students in the Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University (SUNY) from 2000-2003 and residents,
while practicing at the Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency in Kingston, PA from 1987-1999; where
she served as Director of Geriatrics for three years. Her initial NP position was geriatric nurse
practitioner at the Wilkes-Barre VA Nursing Home from 1982-1987.
Susan has provided over 400 geriatric presentations in 32 states. She completed a book chapter and
published in geriatric, primary care and nursing journals. Susan has presented nationally at: National
Conference for Gerontological Nurse Practitioners, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American
College of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioner Associates for Continuing Education, American Society
on Aging, American Council on Aging, American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators and the
Assisted Living Federation of America. She presents at nurse practitioner, long term care nursing and
pharmacy dinner meetings and for regional/state nurse practitioner CE conferences.
Susan founded GeriScan Geriatric Consulting in 1999. This national geriatric consulting firm, winner of
two regional business awards, focuses on geriatric education and advising. She serves as a consultant and
speakers’ bureau member for several pharmaceutical corporations. Susan is also a member of the National
Speakers’ Association.
