Director, Nursing Division
Susan Brown, MSN, RN, BC, FNP, APRN, BC, has over 15 years of nursing experience, as an RN, an FNP, and a faculty
member in Schools of Nursing. After earning her BSN from Kent State University in 1990, Ms. Brown worked as
a CCRN staff nurse in the SICU of University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the SICU and PACU of The Cleveland
Clinic Foundation.
In December 1994, she completed her MSN/FNP from Case Western Reserve University’s Frances Payne Bolton
School of Nursing, where she also served as a clinical instructor and lecturer in the BSN program while
pursuing her graduate degree.
Since 1995, Ms. Brown has been practicing in North Carolina as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in a
variety of primary and acute care settings, including Family Practice, Student Health, and most recently,
Urgent Care clinics. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center.
From 1997 to 2002, Ms. Brown held the position of Assistant Clinical Professor at the Duke University School
of Nursing, where she served as the Curriculum Coordinator for the “Partnerships For Training” program, an online
degree program for MSN/FNP, MSN/CNM, and PA students. During this time, Ms. Brown also served as an Adjunct
Faculty member in the East Carolina University School of Nursing. From 2002 to 2004, Ms. Brown was an online
instructor in the BSN program at the University of Phoenix Online. In 2005, Ms. Brown was selected as an Adjunct
Faculty member for the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and currently serves
as a preceptor for Residency students in the Education program.
In 2004, Ms. Brown joined JADE Learning, Inc., as a Nurse Planner, where she coordinated, developed and
implemented online Continuing Education courses for RNs, and led JADE Learning’s efforts to become an Accredited
Provider of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation. In 2005, Ms. Brown was
appointed to the position of Director of the Nursing Division.
Ms. Brown is certified in Nursing Professional Development by the ANCC. In 2005, Ms. Brown was elected to the
office of Vice-President for the Dogwood Affiliate of the National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO),
where she also serves as a mentor to nursing students. In addition to her membership in the Dogwood Affiliate,
Ms. Brown is a member of the NNSDO, the North Carolina Nurses Association, and The e-Learning Guild. She has been
invited to present at numerous conferences, including those of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner
Faculty (NONFP), the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA),
the National Nursing Staff Development Organization (NNSDO), Sigma Theta Tau International, and the Asynchronous
Learning Network (ALN).
Ms. Brown continues to enjoy working as an FNP in an urgent care setting. Her areas of interest include women’s
health, health promotion, patient/staff education, and e-learning technologies.
